Swan Lake Wildlife Management Area - 270-224-2244
Near the confluence of the Ohio and Mississippi rivers, this prime wintering area for migratory waterfowl contains numerous sloughs, oxbow lakes and Kentucky's largest natural lake, Swan Lake. Closest Community: Wickliffe
West Kentucky Wildlife Management Area - 270-488-3233
A mixture of bottomland and upland forests, remnants prairie, and crop and brush land, this area supports substantial populations of White Tailed Deer, Wild Turky, Bobwhite, Woodcock, Eastern Cottontail and Swamp Rabbit, Gray & Fox Squirrel, and numerous other small animals.
The area also contains marshland, warm water streams, ponds and some virgin forest, and is possibly the best place in the state to see native prairie grasses. Closest Community: Grahamville
Kentucky Dam State Nongame Wildlife Natural Area - 270-362-4318
This area provides wintering habitat for up to 50,000 gulls from the Grat Lakes, Canadian Arctic and the Prairie Provinces. Kentucky Lake and nearby Lake Barkley host one of the largest concentrations of gulls in the eastern United States. Wading birds and waterfowl are present year round. Closest Community: Grand Rivers

This international Biosphere Reserve is a 170,000 acres recreation area offering an exceptional variety and abundance of wildlife. More than 230 species of birds visit here throughout the year, and the forest supports 53 species of mammals. Land between the Lakes host's Kentucky's only herd of European fallow deer. Pennyrile Forest State Resort Park 270-797-3421
Surrounded by 15,331 forested acres sculpted with cliffs and rock outcrops, this site is home to white tailed deer, eastern cottontail rabbit and squirrel. Habitats also include swamp forest with a small grove of bald cypress and a 36 acre lake. Closest Community: Dawson Springs
John James Audubon State Park - 270-826-2247
On the Mississippi Flyway and known for its migratory birds and spring wildflowers, this urban park is home to white tailed deer, raccoon, striped skunk, red fox, opossum, great horned owl, squirrel and rabbitt. Seven woodpeckers species and numerous other songbirds can be found. Closest Community: Henderson
Sloughs Wildlife Management Area, Sauerheber Refuge Unit 270-827-2673
This area is well known for hosting large populations of migrant waterfowl during winter. Agricultural bottomlands and managed wetlands attract 30,000 Canada geese and
15,000 ducks of various species. Eagles, hawks and shorebirds also frequent the area. Closest Community: Henderson
Mammoth Cave National Park 270-758-2328
This international Biosphere Reserve features the world's longest known cave system, with over 350 miles of mapped passageways. White tailed deer, wild turkey, raccoon and squirrel are just a few of the many animals that can be seen. Cars often stop along the road to view the wildlife, or the park has 70 miles of trails that offer great viewing areas. Closest Community: Park City
Dale Hollow Lake State Resort Park 270-433-7431
On 27,700 acre Dale Hollow Lake, this site is known for its wintering bald eagles, many white tailed deer, wild turkey, raccoon, gray fox and squirrel. Rolling terrain features hardwoods, boulder slope and waterfalls, and supports a wide variety of plants. Eagles Point and other overlooks offer panoramic lake views. Closest Community: Burkesville
Big South Fork National River & Recreation Area 606-376-3787
This remote and rugged area boasts a diversity of plants and wildlife. Black bears have returned to this area, and river otter have been reintroduced. Closest Community: Revelo
Green River Lake Wildlife Management Area 270-465-5039
Surrounding the Green River Lake, more than half of this Wildlife Management Area is forested. The site is home to white tailed deer, wild turkey, eastern cottontail rabbit, bob white and squirrel. Watch for eastern bluebird and yellow shafted flicker in uplands; mallard, pintail, Canada goose, great white heron and bald eagles favor the ponds and lakes. Closest Community: Campbellsville
Beargrass Creek State Nature Preserve 502-458-1328
This natural area, nestled in the center of Louisville, offers urban dwellers opportunities to hike and leave the city behind. The preserve contains more than 180 species of trees, shrubs and flowering plants. The area hosts more than 150 species of birds.
The site is well known for a diversity of warblers during spring and fall migrations. The area is home to great horned and screech owls, and Kirkland's water snake, a sensitive species. Closest Community: Louisville
Taylorsville Lake State Park and Wild Management Area 502-477-8713
It's not uncommon to see white tailed deer, wild turkey, gray and red fox, groundhog, river otter, and squirrel on this 3,050 acre site at Taylorsville Lake.
Songbirds such as the indigo bunting and western bluebird are plentiful. Red shouldered hawk, barred owl and osprey are also common here; many migratory waterfowl stop over. Closest Community: Taylorsville
Buckley Wildlife Sanctary 859-873-5711
Nestled in the rolling hills of Woodford County, this site lies near the Kentucky River and holds oak, hickory, cedar and cropland. The area is a virtual plant viewing paradise. Whit tailed deer, eastern cotton tail rabbit, gray & fox squirrel, raccoon, groundhog, little brown bat, snapping and box turtle, fence lizard, northern spring peeper and gray tree frog are common. Closest Community: Frankfort
Central Kentucky Wildlife Management Area 859-986-4130
The flat to gently rolling terrain supports fox and gray squirrel, dove, eastern cottontail rabbit, opossum, bobwhite and white tailed deer. Also watch for wild turkey, coyote, red & gray fox, muskrat, mink and a great variety of songbirds. The Batch's burrowing crayfish, known to exist only in Madison, Estill and Garrard counties, is found here. Closest Community: Richmond (North) Berea (South)

Secluded within 300,000 acres of Daniel Boone National Forest, the abundant wildlife of this park includes white tailed deer, bobcat, gray fox, raccoon, gray squirrel, and wild turkey. The mixture of pines and hardwoods along steep slopes attract such birds as woodpeckers,
red shouldered hawks, and migratory songbirds. The park is also bordered by 4.5 miles of a Kentucky Wild River section of the Cumberland River, used by mallard, wood duck and beaver. Closest Community: Corbun
Carter Caves State Resort Park 606-286-4411
More than 20 caverns wind their way beneath rugged upland oak hickory and mixed pine-hardwood forests. Some of the caves are unchartered and home to the endangered Indiana Bat.
Raccoon, striped shuck, chipmunk, squirrel, eastern cottontail rabbit, opossum, white tailed deer, red & gray fox and weasel live here. A 40 acre reservoir, small pond and freshwater marsh providing inviting habitat for beaver, muskrat, river otter, mink, wood duck, merganser, mallard, grebe, coot, great blue and green heron and killdeer. Jesse Stuart State Nature Preserve 502-573-2886
This site stretches from ridge tops to wooded valleys. Watch for white tailed deer, wild turkey, rufus sided towhee, white eyed vireo, red tailed hawk, opossum, groundhog, striped shuck, raccoon, gray and fox squirrel, red fox, eastern cottontail rabbit and chipmunk.
Nocturnal flying squirrels are common in some areas. Closest Community: Greenup
Lilley Cornett Woods 606-622-1476
The largest remaining virgin forest in the state (250 acres), boasts bobwhite, ruffled grouse, wild turkey, woodcock, wood duck, common egret, red shouldered hawk, cardinal, scarlet tanager and eastern bluebird. Raccoon, beaver, muskrat, river otter, white tailed deer, and red & gray fox also live here. Elk have been reintroduced in the area. The largest herd can be found nearby at the Addington Enterprise Wildlife Management Area. Closest Community: Hazard
Hensley Settlement, Cumberland Gap National Historic Park 606-248-2817
Situated on an isolated plateau astride Brush Mountain, Hensley settlement is a remnant community of 12 scattered farmstands. White tailed deer and wild turkey live on the plateau along with Kentucky Warbler and wood frog. Closest Community: Middlesboro
